Statement from Hon. Fernando Ferrer on the Need for an Accurate Vote Tally Sunday, October 14, 2001 "When I spoke to my supporters during the campaign and on election night, I clearly stated that I would support the Democratic Party nominee. As of this moment, we don't know who that nominee is. "I have been a Democrat all of my life -- and when I give my word, it means something. After the Board of Elections finishes its official count and certifies a winner, I will either support Mark's campaign or continue with my own -- presumably with his support. In either instance, Mark and I will have a discussion about the troubling nature of the campaign waged against me. "But there is a more immediate issue before New York City voters. I am concerned by the new revelations regarding the final vote count, as the New York City Board of Elections acknowledges that the original tally miscounted tens of thousands of votes cast and did not include more than 55,000 paper ballots. Given these facts, I call on the Board of Elections to expedite the count of all valid votes so that we are all assured of a fair, complete, and accurate final count. "I hope that Mark will join me in calling for an accurate vote tally so that there won't be a cloud over this process and we can all move forward." |
