The Guardian Chronicle: Building Bridges to Law Enforcement, Community, Youth,& You "The News You Need To Hear!" Pataki Receives The Endorsement of the African, and Caribbean-American Community:Story and Photos by Ralph E. Smith- Publisher The wall to wall room of African-American Leaders and also members of the Black Press on May 16, 2002 was standing room only as Black People rallied around Governor George E. Pataki. My use of the term Black People comes from my study of history. As I looked around the room, I saw people who looked like me. I saw the many shades of Black People coming together announcing their endorsements of Pataki citing his dedication to the needs of the small business community and minority business owners, providing resources to bolster economic development in minority communities, and his leadership in making health care more accessible to all of New York's families. Tiki Barber, the New York Giants runningback, served as Master-of-Ceremonies at the endorsement event. Detective Jackie Parris, President of the Guardians' Association of the New York City Police Department, and Elder John Boyd, II, Pastor, New Bethel Ministries, spoke on behalf of the enthusiastic crowd made up of New Yorkers from a wide-variety of backgrounds including business leaders, educators, lawyers, police officers, correction officers, doctors, and clergy. The group is representative of the board and diverse base of support Governor Pataki has secured as a result of policies that resonate with people across New York State, and from all walks of life, and build on the endorsement Pataki received in March from dozens of Baptist ministers and religious leaders in the African-American Community. Detective Jacqueline Parris, the President of the 6,500-member Guardians Association of the New York City Police Department, said, "The Guardians' support for Governor Pataki is based on a whole list of issues, not the least of which is his proven and outspoken support of police programs like expanding access to affordable, quality healthcare, are also of great important to us. Governor Pataki has been a strong leader for the Guardians and all New Yorkers." Roy A. Hastick, Sr., President and Founder of the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said, "After serious consideration and much deliberation on the talented pool of candidates for governor, I have decided to personally endorse the Honorable George Pataki for a third term as New York State Governor. He has shown great sensitivity to the needs of the small business community and minority business owners, providing resources to bolster economic development in minority communities." Governor Pataki said, "It is such an honor to stand here with this incredible, impressive group of men and women from the African-American and Caribbean- American communities. Working together, we've made a difference for all New Yorkers, making record investments in education, providing thousands of New Yorkers with access to affordable, quality healthcare, and making the right decisions to grow our economy and create jobs. And working together, we will turn today's challenges into a new era of opportunity for all New Yorkers. I deeply appreciate the strong support shown here today." Today's endorsement continues the drumbeat of unified and diverse support for Governor Pataki. In April, Governor Pataki attended the launch of Amigos de Pataki, a coalition of Hispanic men and women coming together in support of the Governor. Last Saturday, Governor Pataki launched his bid for re-election telling several thousand cheering supporters that New York State is prouder, stronger and better thanks to the unity of New Yorkers.
