I am truly in awe. I want to thank-you very much for the recognition. I look back on my years in the department and some of the good and bad times that have taken place. One notable achievement for me,was in 1996 when I became the first(and hopefully not the last)NYC Correction Officer to become a Vice-President of the National Black Police Association(Northeast Region)..This was a very proud moment for me.Simply because it symbolize, that we(Corrections)had gained long over-due recognition in the law enforcement community. I think about my mentors, who took me under their wing..Lenny Rubain,Parris Davis,Quaslim Inham,Ali Al-Rahman, Michael Henry, Jacqueline Perry,Dianne Kevelier,Dottie Alston, Erroll Toulon, Eric Taylor,Marron Hopkins and many, many others. Although I might have had differences with them..I respected them for standing up.. Now the torch has been passed on to you and all the other Strong Brothers and Sisters..I know you will carry the torch with strength and pride.. May God Bless you and all the Warriors, March On Soldier..with the memory of Malcolm,Medgar,Martin,Sojourner,Harriet, and all those whose shoulders we stand upon...reach back and bring another brother and sister up the mountain top..For when Black Men and Women are in Unity we make things happen.
Bless you my Brother, Andrew Roane-retired(April 2001) |
