The Guardian Chronicle Letters To the Editor November 4, 2003 Dear Editor, This is in response to Andrew Roane's letter to Guardian Chronicle regarding mis treatment of Irish-American managers in the Correction Department. First don't lose sight of what the subject matter is about. The article in the October 31st Chief-Leader outlined the recent demotions of Irish-American managers. The first two Chiefs were demoted under the guise of restructing and according to the Chief-Leader that was not true. The Chief Leader alleged that it was due to events from the past year. Ask yourself who was Serra's direct supervisor and why hasn't he been held accountable too. The demotion of Warden Slattery from "A" Warden to ADW because of a water pressure problem is a travesty of justice. Civilian plumbers worked on the problem for 13 hours. If it was such a major issue and threat to the well being of institution why didn't any of the Senior Staff respond to the situation? There was no UOF's or Injuries to MOS's or inmates. Horn and Davoren stated publicly that they thought Warden Slattery did not care. Is that grounds for a $50,000 paycut and demotion? Rehashing unsubstantiated charges from the past is attempt not to discuss the above matters with an even hand. I have facts not rumors! The article in the Chief brought to light recent events by another Chief who was not discipline for an outrageous incident and her failure to notified the department. Reporting it to her supervisor (Chief of Department Davoren) is not in Directive 5000. Waiting 5 days to call COD is not in the Directive either I had a great career and so did Andrew. Andrew, you knew me over twenty years and I have and will come to anyone's aid regardless of their skin color or ethnicity. Nor will I try to silence a fellow retiree for expressing his views about exposing wrongs or injustices and double standards. Regards, Brian J. Sharkey Past President NYCD Emerald Society
