| Subject: THE BEST
This is one of the toughest losses I have experienced within the department. As a Captain it was my pleasure to have had the opportunity to know and supervise Walt in the Beacon (Dorm 15B), as part of the IID Program. I know most members of service knew Walt from the Academy, but those of us from the Beacon, especially the IID staff, were privileged to experience all those special qualities that Walt brought with him as a rookie officer to a new jail. I remember when Walt came to me and told me he was offered a position in the Academy and asked me what do I think he should do. Although I wanted to be selfish, and tell him to stay, I told him he had to go because the recruits needed him more. About six months later Walt brought his recruit class up to his old housing area for OJT. I got a phone call to report to the area, as Walt was walking out he put three shanks (weapons) in my hand. An inmate had given it to him to take out of the housing area (in fear for his safety). Walt was respected by both staff and inmates alike and because of this respect he could go into any housing area and transform it into one of the best kept areas in the facility. I have never met anyone who took so much pride in what they did, from supervising the mopping of a floor to supervising an academy of recruits, his undeniable pride would always shine through. As I spoke with Walt, over the years, he would always express that SENSITIVE side of himself by thanking me for the time we spent in the Beacon. I am just glad that I had the opportunity to tell him that he was the BEST Officer I ever supervised. I thank God and feel privileged to have known him. I love You Walt and I will never forget you. RIP,
Retired ADW Dane Martin.
Subject: BIG MIKE
Dear Mike,
By now you are already know , but I need to let the rest of the world know you were and will always be a special friend, a mentor, and leader amongst leaders. Mike you will always be the persona of these special passages in the Bible.
A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver of gold. Proverbs 22:1 The character you demonstrated on a daily basis was and will always be an inspiration for me and thousands of others.
He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the lord. Proverbs 18:22 You always beamed and smiled like a Cheshire Cat when you spoke of your wife.
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, Proverbs 13:22. Your three sons and nephew are fine examples including the thousands of recruit officers, in-service, co-workers, civilians, supervisors, managers and retirees that you have had a personal impact upon.
As Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17 You raised the bar and brought out the best in people.
"Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!" Matthew 25:23 There is no doubt that our Father has called you to Heaven to address the multiple of battalions.
I love you Mike

From Carl Cook
I had the distinguished pleasure of meeting Captain Walton on June 26, 2008, the day I entered the academy. I knew almost immediately that this man was a force to be reckoned with. His stern demeanor is what I will cherish. When he would step into the academy for roll call in the mornings, you knew MR. OATH OF HONOR was standing before you. He represented that to the upmost. The academy truly lost an Icon. My sincere prayers go out to his family. |
