October 25, 2010

I just wanted to drop your association a note to extend my thanks to the Correction Guardians Association, especially Imam Umar Abdul-Jalil; the Correction Officers Benevolent Association, Elias Husamudeen, the Correction Captains Association, the ADW/DW Association, and the civilian unions, as well as the Fraternal Organizations for partnering together for a beautifully planned Memorial Service for deceased department members.

I attended this Memorial Service at Antioch Baptist Church on Saturday, October 23, 2010 on invitation from the Guardians and COBA in remembrance of my cousin, Correction Officer Michael B Muzio, West Facility. Michael was tragically struck down at 41 years of age by a heart attack in August, 2008.

To me and my family, Michael was more then just a cousin that you see once in a while. To us he was a brother, a friend, a member of our household. When Michael was recovering from his first heart attack, he had moved back to my home where he was loved and subsequently called to his home in Heaven.

To have the members of the Department of Correction remember Michael and all the other deceased members with this Memorial Service was an honor and tribute to all of them. I was honored to have been invited and moved by the many stories told by the various speakers. It is nice to know that these deceased members, although no longer with us, are not just former employees that are now gone. Just having those few hours at the memorial warms your heart to know that none of these people have been forgotten. I know now that as time goes on and memories diminish, the people who put this memorial service into action will not let the deceased be forgotten.

I again THANK all of you for remembering and honoring all those that are no longer with us, and for inviting my family to be part of this celebration.

Sincerely,

Kevin J McAlvin, Captain (ret.)

A STUDENT OF CAPTAIN MICHAEL WALTON -NYCD!

It’s been almost 10 years since I graduated the NYCD Academy; I am a proud student of Captain Michael Walton. Today, I am a criminal justice instructor at the high school level and as I watched my students with pride as they are developing the needed skills for a fine profession, I often think of Captain Walton and how proud he must have been each time he graduated a class. In addition, I give him (and Officer Smith) full credit for all of my successes with NYCD and for where I am today; teaching in a criminal justice academy.

May God continue to bless Michael’s family and I am proud to say that I am a proud student of Captain Michael Walton. I know that he is watching over us all.
