“Nassau County is one of the most segregated places in the United States of America.”
Tom Suozzi, Former Nassau County Executive
Join us after the press conference at 2:30 PM in Federal Court before Magistrate Judge Joan M. Azrack at 225 Cadman Plaza East in Courtroom 6E N, Brooklyn, NY in our enforcement proceeding to force Acting Sheriff Michael Sposato and Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano to comply with the Federal Consent Order issued April 2, 1998 directing Nassau County to enforce equal opportunity and affirmative action laws and policies. The centerpiece of the hard won Consent Decree is the creation of an Affirmative Action Specialist to initiate recruitment of minorities and affirmative action programs and investigate racial bias complaints. That position was filled by the highly qualified Dr. Joseph Volker who, in an act of retaliation by the Acting Sheriff was fired on Friday, March 5, 2010 because he tried to do his job and refused to go along with the County’s program to cover-up and suppress racial bias complaints. On Wednesday, March 10, 2010, Acting Sheriff Sposato announced that he and County Executive Mangano appointed Andre E. Guilty a former rapper musician who performed with Public Enemy in Dr. Volker’s place and that Mr. Guilty would report directly to Mangano who himself would oversee bias investigations. This was a clear violation of the Federal decree and proves that Nassau County believes itself to be above the law.
We will not wait to get the hard won justice we deserve - we will now act to translate the victory of our predecessors into reality for our people.
We need all members of the rank and file of the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department to attend press conference called by fraternal organizations throughout the State and supporters.
It is unfortunate that we have to again seek relief in the Federal Court, but it is even more unfortunate that Nassau County’s white power structure has left the minority community with no alternative. There can be no denying the fact that racial injustice engulfs this community. We are now prepared for direct action where we will lay out our case, not only before the conscious of the community, but in the Federal Court.
