FIRE SAFETY OFFICER IN THE NYCD

Correction Officer Luz D. Rivera is  very proud to be one a few women to

work in the NYCD Fire Safety Unit.  "I love my work and the staff I work with"

Story by Ralph E Smith- Guardian Chronicle

The reason why I became a Correction Officer was because as a minority female I wanted to make a difference as well as to be able to pursue a challenging career as a law enforcement agent. In trying to achieve my goal I have manage to perform my duties as a Correction Officer, take care of my ill mother, and family, my household, commit myself to the Hispanic Society, and fellow co-workers alike and yet be able to attend John Jay College and obtain an Associates degree in Criminal Justice, and presently pursuing a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. I would also like to add I'm the only female in the Fire and Safety Unit at the present time. A position that as to my knowledge was also held by three other females years ago.

I would also like to thank you for taking your time in giving me this recognition.

1990
Joined The Department of Correction as a Correction Officer on Rikers Island, where I was assigned to Rose M. Singer Center. Within the year I became a Delegate for the New York City Department of Correction Hispanic Society.

1992
Moved up in rank in the Hispanic Society Executive board as follows:
A) Delegate
B) Sergeant of Arms,
C) Treasurer
D) Vice -President of Finance

2000
Awarded a position with the Violence Reduction Task Force as a coordinator, I assisted in team efforts to rehabilitate and reduce violence both in jail and outside in the community. I was also assigned to the Inspectional Service and Compliance Division working in the Food service, Facility Temperature and Fire Safety Monitoring Unit, where I maintained and updated the computer database. I was also responsible for preparing court order audits in which I was required to examine hundreds of records and meticulously extract detailed information.

Received Certificate of appreciation, for assisting in the preparation of the 100th year celebration of GMDC

2001
Received a certificate for outstanding duty, issued by the Department of Correction to members of the service, who unselfishly gave their time and energy to aid the families of the victims of the World Trade Center Disaster.

Volunteered at One Police Plaza command Center where I answered phone calls from the victim's families and other law enforcement agencies.

2002
Awarded Employee of the month while assigned to Inspectional Service Compliance Division in August 2002

2004
Awarded Employee of the month while assigned to Inspectional Service Division in August 2004

2005
Transferred to Queens Court where I supervised inmates and helped with the process of court appearances, as well as computer data input.

I was awarded a transfer to The Fire and Safety Unit where I am the only female Correction Officer assigned to the unit. I conduct audits of all in Island facilities as well as borough facilities, update database, as well as generate reports for Division 1 and 11.
