Dear Friends and Neighbors:
Recently Suffolk County has been hit with large amounts of rain and strong winds that caused major damage to homes, downing power lines leaving thousands without power. As we enter hurricane season it is extremely important that we are prepared. Below is a list of things you can do to aid you in the event Suffolk County is hit hard with a hurricane or a tropical storm.

* Develop a family plan for survival and property protection. Rehearse the plan so everyone knows what to do.
* Have flashlights, battery-operated radios and extra batteries on hand. Check the batteries to make sure they are fresh.
* Know the hurricane risks in your area. Learn the storm surge history and elevation of your area. Learn the location of official shelters or make plans for a local hotel/motel. Be prepared to take alternate routes to these locations as main streets may be closed.
* Learn safe routes inland away from the ocean or Long Island Sound.
* If your residence is in a potential flood or strom surge zone, be prepared to evacuate when officials recommend it.
* Arrande now for elderly and others with special needs such as those who depend on electric life-support devices. Alert LIPA customer service and sign up for LIPA's Critical Care Program (1-800-490-0025) or you can contact the Suffolk County Office of Handicapped Services and sign up for JEEP (Joint Emergency Evacuation Program for persons with disablilities) (see attached flyer below)
* Inventory personal property; safely secure all records and valuable documents in a watertight place.
* Have material available to protect your doors and windows. Boarding or shutting windows is significantly more effective than taping windows which barely strengthens the window and will not protect at all against flying debris.
* Put together a fanily hurricane evacuation kit that includes bottled water, bedding and clothing, including sleeping bags and pillows and appropriate prescription medicines.
* Ensure that enough non-perishable food and water supplies are on hand. One gallon of water per person per day is recommended.
* Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
* Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed of dead wood.
* Determine where to move a boat in an emergency.
* Provide for pets.

If you find during a storm that you are without power or notice downed power lines please call LIPA at 1-800-490-0075.

Shed The Meds!!!
Prescription drugs have now become the drug of choice for our young people because they are free and very easy to obtain. Many of us have prescriptions that just sit in our medicine cabinets after we no longer need them and young people are taking them and many of us don't realize that they are missing. With that in mind, Legislator Gregory is asking you to "Shed the Meds" by bringing your old and leftover prescription drugs to the North Amityville Senior Center on September 15, 2010 from 11-3. All medications dropped off will be placed in a recepticle provided by the Sheriff's Department and destroyed through the Sherriff's Department also.

Dear Correction Family and Friends,

As most if not all of you are aware that the annual RETIREE'S REUNION AND PICNIC is scheduled July 24th at FDR Park(2957 Crompond Road,Yorktown Hgts,NY)..This is our 5th year..When I first did this picnic back in 2005..It was not intended to be a "annual"..But I was reminded by those who came out(and continue to come out) that the whole idea of this picnic, was for friends to get together to hug, take photo's,exchange numbers, show photo's of kids and grandkids..and of course tell stories(with a little lie or two)..But most of all..the picnic is truly a reunion. To see old friends we worked midnights with, friends who remember what was like to be "stuck" for overtime..To reminisce about friends who have passed on..At least once or twice a month I receive a email about someone from our Correction Family who has passed on to our ancestors. And with that in mind it motivates me to get ready for the picnic, because why should we gather only for funerals. So again, I am asking that you spread the word..This year's theme:"It's Great to be Retired"

Due to rising printing cost and the cost for the permit and liquor license(contributions are accepted)..the tee-shirts will $17..and I am working on ball caps..which will be $12..PLEASE BEAR IN MIND..THAT I AM ONLY ORDERING 50 TEE-SHIRTS AND 25 BALL-CAPS..
TEE-SHIRTS WIL BE IN THE FOLLOWING SIZES: Medium, large, double xxtra large..If you order a tee-shirt and cap the price will be $25 for both..FIRST COME,FIRST SERVED..PLEASE BEAR IN MIND I WILL NOT HOLD ANY SHIRT..UNLESS IT'S PAID IN FULL..send personal check or money order to:ANDREW ROANE 3363 SEDGWICK AVE #1W..Bronx,NY 10463
THIS PICNIC IS OPEN TO ALL RETIREE'S,FRIENDS,FAMILY,ACTIVE MEMBERS OF DOC ,FRATERNAL ORGANIZATIONS AND MEMBERS OF OTHER CIVIL ORGANIZATIONS..

Some idea's that have been proposed..1.Chess tournament..spades or bid whist(partners..neither of which I know a lot about)..If the interest is there..we can do it..One other thing..we will have a liquor permit..but I ask 2 things..1.Please do not drink in front of the kids that might be there..2.Drink responsibly!!
