Leadership, vision, and management skills are the reasons why the Guardian Chronicle picks Chief of Staff Darryl Harrison from the New York City Correction Department for Leader of the Month.
Steel sharpens steel and the best steel comes from the Marines! Mr. Harrison's military background and committment to establishing goals and setting standards that accomplish the mission of the New York City Correction Department earned him a promotion to Chief of Staff.
He was first assigned to the Brooklyn Correctional Facility, a command he worked at until March 1994. From March, 1994 until May, 1995 Harrison worked at the James A. Thomas Center on Rikers Island, and then at the Emergency Services Unit.
It was in August, 1996 that he was promoted to the rank of Captain and returned to a facility he had worked at as an officer, the James A. Thomas Center. Then, in January, 1997, Captain Harrison went to work in Division II on Rikers Island. In August, 1997, Captain Harrison was assigned to work for the Chief of Security in the Operations Security Intelligence Unit.
In March, 1998, then-Chief of Department William J. Fraser selected Captain Harrison for the demanding position of Confidential Assistant to the Chief of Department. It was in November, 2000 when Mayor Rudolph Giuliani chose William J. Fraser as Commissioner of the Department, that Commissioner Fraser then turned to Captain Harrison and selected him as his Chief of Staff.
