Press Statement: On September 6, 2010 at the Labor Day Parade on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, Ralph E. Smith-the publisher of the ‘Guardian Chronicle’ was forcibly removed from the parade route by NYPD officers who purposely prevented him from fully documenting the parade. Ralph E. Smith is an awarded hero Correction Officer and a credentialed journalist. The ‘Guardian Chronicle’ is an online magazine committed to “building bridges to law enforcement, community & youth”
The BLACK LAW ENFORCEMENT ALLIANCE Director Jerome Rice states “The forcible removal of reporter and heroic correction officer Ralph E. Smith from the Labor Day Parade route is inexcusable. Mr. Smith was forcibly removed from the parade route at the direction of a NYPD supervisor and denied access that other press had been given.
The New York Police Department owes Ralph E. Smith a full explanation and apology for denying this credentialed journalist from documenting the festivities. The NYPD cannot continue to subjectively limit and restrict access of the working press.”
