WHEEL OF FORTUNE

THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE JOURNEY  By Anthony Pizarro:

GUARDIAN CHRONICLE.COM:  Building Bridges To Law Enforcement, Community Youth & You

Ralph E. Smith- Publisher

First and foremost I want to start out by saying it is truly an honor and privilege to share with all that may read this journey of mine as a NYC Correction Officer getting an opportunity to appear on the Wheel of Fortune, one of the most watched TV shows which was celebrating its 25th Anniversary.

The journey began in May when I applied online to become a contestant on the show after I heard they were coming to New York to tape for their 25th Anniversary.  They were looking for those who were either in law enforcement or had done something heroic in their lives.   I applied for what was later to be known as Hero’s week.  Because I felt I fit the criteria on both levels.  First having been a NYC Corrections Officer for twenty years and having worked in one of the toughest prison systems in the world to come out and be almost completed with my career was to me a heroic feat in and of itself; second and by far even more heroic, was the opportunity to give someone who was my hero and my best friend one of my kidneys and give him an opportunity to live a normal life dialysis free; On March 15, 2007  I gave a kidney to this special person my “Dad”.  After I donated my kidney many family members, co-workers, and friends gave me the utmost respect for the generous gift I had given to my Dad. To them I wish to say your prayers, moral support and well wishes were all greatly appreciated and did not go unnoticed.  Many told me that God would bless me for what I had done and many said good things would happen to me.  I never expected nor was I asked for anything good to happen to me for I feel that God blesses me and my family everyday when we wake above ground but I do feel that good things come to good people.

In June I received an email from the Wheel of Fortune telling me I qualified for an audition. Upon arrival to the audition I was a little nervous because there was a lot of competition, approximately100 people.  I put my game face on and went to work.  At the end of the audition, we were cut down to about forty and were told by the coordinators after they look at tapes and notes, if we were to quality for the show, we would be notified the first week in September.

September 4, I got the call.  The call telling me they wanted me on their show for Hero’s Week.  My family and I called everyone possible to share the news and after I gained my composure back I actually spoke with God and asked if this was one of his signs of blessing me for what I had done for my Father, because it was all oh so surreal.  September 30, 2007 with the support of my family, friends and my D.O.C. extended family from MDC, MNCTS, NIC, 60 Hudson Street, and IIS Helpdesk I was told to go out represent and win big but most of all have fun.  When it was show time I was ready, my mind was in game mode, I was dressed sharp and I was ready to play to the part. The feelings that were racing through my mind at the time were that there are thousands of people here in Radio City Music Hall cheering me on and soon there would be millions around the world that would be watching me perform so I have to step up. And step it up is what I did!  I won a significant amount of money and a trip to Florence, Italy and was the big winner of my Show.  Although I did not solve the bonus puzzle, it was truly a dream come true and a blessing by God to have the success I had on this show.

December 6, 2007 will be my last day working for the NYC City Department of Correction, so to my extended family, all the men and women of the Department that I have had the privilege of working with, I say to you all, Thanks for the Memories as there were many.  You are all heroes in my eyes and are heroes in someone in your families’ eyes, you can bank on that.

In closing I just wanted to say that I look forward to spending quality time with my awesome wife, Liz, and my two beautiful children, Anthony and Jaleesa and we will be living life to the fullest.  Now I will have more time to pursue my passion in the Financial Services Field where I will continue to educate and provide financial solutions to the many families who need help.

You can also read my contestant diary on www.wheeloffortune.com under contestant diary archives.

May God Bless you all in life as well as your careers!

Regards,

Officer Anthony Pizarro

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Former Georgia prison inmate Genarlow Wilson says he feels no "negative energy" toward the district attorney who prosecuted him for receiving oral sex from a 15-year-old when he was a teenager himself. News Credit:  CNN

Megan Williams West Virginia Woman Raped By Six White Men and a Woman

Tells the Associated Press:, " For at least a week, authorities say, the 20-year-old black woman was kept captive in a shed, tortured, beaten, forced to eat rat, dog and human feces, and raped by six white men and women who taunted her with racial slurs.

"They just kept saying 'This is what we do to niggers down here,'" Williams told The Associated Press in one of her most extensive interviews since the shocking case made national headlines last month.

Seated in a rocking chair in her mother's living room, about 50 miles from that shed, the slight woman with cocoa-colored skin says she was hopelessly outnumbered by people who just wanted to hurt a black person.

"I just hope they fry for what they did to me. That's really all I got to say," she said. "I hope they fry."

Marquis Evans Keeys, 19, is wanted in connection with the Aug. 24 murder of Barry Rose at his Saw Creek Estates home.
Andrew Scott
By Andrew Scott
Pocono Record Writer
October 10, 2007

MILFORD — It appears a Bushkill man charged in the Aug. 24 fatal shooting of a Saw Creek Estates resident will not be extradited back to Pike County this week as was expected.

Marquis Keeys, 18, was arrested last week in New York City in connection with the murder of retired New York corrections officer Barry Rose, 46, in Rose's home on Bexhill Court off Wickes Road in Lehman Township.
Related Stories

* For more information about the Saw Creek Murder click here

Keeys, who had been at large for more than a month, was supposed to sign his extradition waiver papers Tuesday morning, which would have allowed him to be returned to Pike County. But Assistant District Attorney Ray Tonkin learned Tuesday afternoon that Keeys for reasons unknown had not signed those papers.

The next step is for the Pike County District Attorney's Office to request Gov. Ed Rendell send a governor's warrant to New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who would then notify the New York court system to extradite Keeys. That process could take up to 90 days (30 days plus a 60-day extension if requested), Tonkin said.

"Meanwhile, Keeys could still change his mind and decide to fight extradition," Tonkin said. "It's possible, though I don't think it's likely."

Keeys' co-defendants, Cameron Harinarain, 18, and Justin Culver, 19, also of Bushkill, are in Pike County Correctional Facility without bail, awaiting trials for their alleged roles in Rose's murder.

Police say Harinarain and Culver have indicated Keeys is the one who killed Rose in a shoot-out when the three entered Rose's home to steal guns.

Police allege the following occurred:

Keeys, Culver and Harinarain, all armed with handguns and wearing dark-colored clothes with hooded sweatshirts and bandannas over their faces, gained entrance to Rose's home.

The three encountered Rose's daughter, Danielle Rose, 22, who pleaded with them not to hurt her or her father and told them her father was asleep.

They had her lead them to her father's room, knock on his door and tell him to come out and talk to them.

Each of the three hid in a separate room and waited for her father to open the door.

When he did, she motioned with her eyes toward the room in which one of them (supposedly Keeys) was hiding. Barry Rose then shot at Keeys, at which point Keeys fired back, hitting Rose and killing him.

The three then fled the house.

WESTCHESTER CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL

BLACK POLICE ASSOCIATION

RESPONDS TO  SEPTEMBER 23, 2007 YONKERS POLICE DEPARTMENT AD IN THE WESTCHESTER JOURNAL NEWSPAPER

In response to the Yonkers Police Department’s (YPD) nearly full-page ad in the September 23, 2007 edition of The Westchester Journal Newspaper, the Westchester Chapter of The National Black Police Association feels that the advertisement is a misrepresentation of the issues. Our criticism is not an attack on the YPD as a whole or the fine officers that serve and protect the Yonkers community. Instead we are demanding critical and fair accountability of the few police officers that cross the line and that the administration recognize and correct their failure to address this ongoing epidemic.
As stated in previous press releases, it is no secret in the law enforcement community of Westchester that the attitudes and actions of some YPD professionals are appalling. These attitudes have been ignored for years. More often these negative attitudes are displayed in the underprivileged communities of color.

6,700 arrest and 34 complaints sounds very impressive. After attending the forum of the NAACP in September 2006, where wall to wall citizens of Yonkers who had complaints (obviously more than 34). The victims were either scared to file a complaint due to fear of retaliation by the accused officers or they didn't know how to file a proper complaint.
Since September 2006, complaints have been filed at the Nepperhan Community Center and with the Yonkers NAACP, as well as the National Action Network. It is well documented that most victims of police brutality admit to being victims, but do not file formal complaints. This is not to say that police brutality does not exist.
It is an outrage to the Yonkers communities of colors and its voters that only 5.3% of its Yonkers police officers are black when the black population of Yonkers is 19%. Again, where are the young men and women of color? Or is the perception of YPD so horrible that no young black man or woman that has grown up in Yonkers wouldn't dare take the job.

To build trust in the communities of color and its voters, the Mayor, the Police Commissioner, along with the City Council should support an independent Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) in order to build trust in the communities of color and its voters. An independent CCRB will serve as a balance between YPD and the community it claims it wants to serve and protect.

About the Westchester Chapter of the National Black Police Association
The National Black Police Association is a nationwide organization of African American Police Associations dedicated to the promotion of justice, fairness, and effectiveness in law enforcement. The NBPA has several chartered organizations throughout the United States, and associate members in Canada, Bermuda, and the United Kingdom. The principal concerns of the NBPA center upon law enforcement issues and the effect of those issues upon the total community. The NBPA serves as an advocate for minority police officers and establishes a national network for the training and education of all police officers and others interested in law enforcement.

The Westchester Chapter of the National Black Police Association is an independent chapter of the national organization whose mission is to uphold the laws of the state of New York. However, as natural leaders it is our moral, ethical and human duty to reach and teach our families and youth by providing increased involvement and support. Thereby enriching lives and enhancing our communities

PBA PRESIDENT PATRICK J. LYNCH

Shooting Officers Yan & Timoshenko

PBA president Patrick J. Lynch said: “It is sad to realize that these miserable individuals will be given much better treatment in the criminal justice system then they gave our brother officers. Armed with automatic weapons, they did not hesitate to fire at officers Yan and Timoshenko who would have arrested them for possession of a stolen vehicle.

This case, and too many others like it, underscores the need for a death penalty in New York State that can withstand constitutional muster. Other states have such laws and it is time for New York State legislators to find the political will to impose the death penalty on those who kill, or attempt to kill, law enforcement officers.

Once again, I’d like to express the deepest gratitude of all New York City police officers to all of the law enforcement officers who participated in the search for and capture of the shooters of our brother officers Yan and Timoshenko. Their support, dedication and professionalism are to be greatly admired.

Let it be known by all of those who think nothing of attacking an officer of the law that if you attack one of us anywhere in this country, you attack all of us, and that we will band together and work tirelessly to bring you to justice.

I would also like to ask all who get this message to join us in keeping officer Timoshenko and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

P.R. DAY PARADE MARCHING WITH MY SON BY N.Y.C CORRECTION OFFICER STEVEN DEJESUS:

Greetings Guardian Chronicle.  My name is Correction Officer Steven Dejesus (1st Officer on left). I marched in the parade with my son Isaiah in the Puerto Rican Day Parade.  My son is in the above photo(left).  He was dancing and making the crowd go crazy.

This was my first time marching and was the best experience ever!  I felt proud to represent the New York City Department of Correction.  I told my son that I was going to dress him up in a NYC Correction Uniform on his birthday and take him with me to the parade.  He always says, "I wanna be like you when I grow up dad.  My son always says he wants to be like me, a New York City Correction Officer.

This day was a perfect day and everyone was happy and proud to be a puerto rican and my son was very happy because he dance to the sounds of salsa and waved the Puerto rican Flag with pride.  At the end of the parade my son said, Daddy, thank you for the best birthday ever.

Courage Under Fire
I Took a Leave of Absence From Work to Care for
My Newborn Baby and My Ailing Father

by Marie Slaughter

NYC Correction Officer

Dear Friends of Marie Slaughter:

For the past two years, Solo Mommy Magazine (www.solomommy.com) – the publication dedicated to empowering single moms with savvier ways to live a simpler life – has celebrated single moms at its annual Mother’s Day Brunch with the "You Go, Mom!" award. This honored has been bestowed to women who are the epitome of strength, courage, and tenacity – all characteristics that the single mom embodies.

As the CEO of Solo Mommy Magazine and Event Coordinator of the 3rd Annual Mother's Day Brunch, I am pleased to inform you that our brunch committee has selected Marie as one of our 2007 “You Go, Mom!” award recipients. The brunch will take place on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at Windows Over Harlem in Harlem, NY (@ the corner of 125th Street, inside of The Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In addition to the awards presentation, there will be a keynote speaker, special singing selection, dramatic reading, and live jazz. I encourage you to support Marie as she receives her honor by either purchasing a ticket to attend for yourself or sponsoring a single mom in need, and/or by placing an ad in our brunch journal. I have attached the ad rates and contract for your convenience.

If you have any questions, I can be reached at 718-425-9092. I look forward to your participating as Solo Mommy Magazine honors Marie next month.

In service to single moms, Feona Sharhran Huff
